Can Distribution Grids Significantly Contribute to Transmission Grids' Voltage Management?
Power generation in Germany is currently transitioning from a system based on
large, central, thermal power plants to one that heavily relies on small,
decentral, mostly renewable power generators. This development poses the
question how transmission grids' reactive power demand for voltage management,
covered by central power plants today, can be supplied in the future.
In this work, we estimate the future technical potential of such an approach
for the whole of Germany. For a 100% renewable electricity scenario we set the
possible reactive power supply in comparison with the reactive power
requirements that are needed to realize the simulated future transmission grid
power flows. Since an exact calculation of distribution grids' reactive power
potential is difficult due to the unavailability of detailed grid models on
such scale, we optimistically estimate the potential by assuming a scaled,
averaged distribution grid model connected to each of the transmission grid
nodes.
We find that for all except a few transmission grid nodes, the required
reactive power can be fully supplied from the modeled distribution grids. This
implies that - even if our estimate is overly optimistic - distributed reactive
power provisioning will be a technical solution for many future reactive power
challenges
Post-Wick theorems for symbolic manipulation of second-quantized expressions in atomic many-body perturbation theory
Manipulating expressions in many-body perturbation theory becomes unwieldily
with increasing order of the perturbation theory. Here I derive a set of
theorems for efficient simplification of such expressions. The derived rules
are specifically designed for implementing with symbolic algebra tools. As an
illustration, we count the numbers of Brueckner-Goldstone diagrams in the first
several orders of many-body perturbation theory for matrix elements between two
states of a mono-valent system.Comment: J. Phys. B. (in press); Mathematica packages available from

Simultaneous Multi-Information Fusion and Parameter Estimation for Robust 3-D Indoor Positioning Systems
Typical WLAN based indoor positioning systems take the received signal strength (RSS) as the major information source. Due to the complicated indoor environment, the RSS measurements are hard to model and too noisy to achieve a satisfactory 3-D accuracy in multi-floor scenarios. To enhance the performance of WLAN positioning systems, extra information sources could be integrated. In this paper, a Bayesian framework is applied to fuse multi-information sources and estimate the spatial and time varying parameters simultaneously and adaptively. An application of this framework, which fuses pressure measurements, a topological building map with RSS measurements, and simultaneously estimates the pressure sensor bias, is investigated. Our experiments indicate that the localization performance is more accurate and robust by using our approach
Performances Comparison of Nonlinear Filters for Indoor WLAN Positioning
Indoor WLAN positioning should be modeled as a nonlinear and non-Gaussian dynamic system due to the complex indoor environment, radio propagation and motion behaviour. The aim of this paper is to analyze different filtering strategies for real life indoor WLAN positioning systems. The performance criteria for the comparison are the mean of localization errors and computational complexity. Three nonlinear filters are analyzed: Fourier density approximation (FF), particle filter (PF) and grid-based filter (GF), which are representatives for deterministic and random density approximation approaches. Our experimental results help to choose the appropriate filtering techniques under different resource limitations
WLAN-Based Pedestrian Tracking Using Particle Filters and Low-Cost MEMS Sensors
Indoor positioning systems based on Wireless LAN (WLAN) are being widely investigated in academia and industry. Meanwhile, the emerging low-cost MEMS sensors can also be used as another independent positioning source. In this paper, we propose a pedestrian tracking framework based on particle filters, which extends the typical WLAN-based indoor positioning systems by integrating low-cost MEMS accelerometer and map information. Our simulation and real world experiments indicate a remarkable performance improvement by using this fusion framework
Enhancing the map usage for indoor location-aware systems
Location-aware systems are receiving more and more interest in both academia and industry due to their promising prospective in a broad category of so-called Location-Based-Services (LBS). The map interface plays a crucial role in the location-aware systems, especially for indoor scenarios. This paper addresses the usage of map information in a Wireless LAN (WLAN)-based indoor navigation system. We describe the benefit of using maNMp information in multiple algorithms of the system, including radio-map generation, tracking, semantic positioning and navigation. Then we discuss how to represent or model the indoor map to fulfill the requirements of intelligent algorithms. We believe that a vector-based multi-layer representation is the best choice for indoor location-aware system
Extent of hypoattenuation on CT angiography source images in Basilar Artery occlusion: prognostic value in the Basilar Artery International Cooperation Study

Background and Purpose: The posterior circulation Acute Stroke Prognosis Early CT Score (pc-ASPECTS) quantifies the extent of early ischemic changes in the posterior circulation with a 10-point grading system. We hypothesized that pc-ASPECTS applied to CT angiography source images predicts functional outcome of patients in the Basilar Artery International Cooperation Study (BASICS).

Methods: BASICS was a prospective, observational registry of consecutive patients with acute symptomatic basilar artery occlusion. Functional outcome was assessed at 1 month. We applied pc-ASPECTS to CT angiography source images of patients with CT angiography for confirmation of basilar artery occlusion. We calculated unadjusted and adjusted risk ratios (RRs) of pc-ASPECTS dichotomized at ≥8 versus <8. Primary outcome measure was favorable outcome (modified Rankin Scale scores 0â3). Secondary outcome measures were mortality and functional independence (modified Rankin Scale scores 0â2).

Results: Of 158 patients included, 78 patients had a CT angiography source images pc-ASPECTS â„8. Patients with a pc-ASPECTS â„8 more often had a favorable outcome than patients with a pc-ASPECTS <8 (crude RR, 1.7; 95% CI, 0.98â3.0). After adjustment for age, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, and thrombolysis, pc-ASPECTS ≥8 was not related to favorable outcome (RR, 1.3; 95% CI, 0.8â2.2), but it was related to reduced mortality (RR, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.5â0.98) and functional independence (RR, 2.0; 95% CI, 1.1â3.8). In post hoc analysis, pc-ASPECTS dichotomized at ≥6 versus <6 predicted a favorable outcome (adjusted RR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.2â7.5).

Conclusions: pc-ASPECTS on CT angiography source images independently predicted death and functional independence at 1 month in the CT angiography subgroup of patients in the BASICS registry.

Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV
Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and
associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a
nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum
range 0.7 5.0 GeV/ is examined,
to include correlations induced by jets originating from low
momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as
associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range
. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in
high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side
short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like
components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with
event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This
invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent
fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related
to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of
uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with
multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton
interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions. Further, the
number scales in the intermediate multiplicity region with the number of binary
nucleon-nucleon collisions estimated with a Glauber Monte-Carlo simulation.Comment: 23 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17,

Multi-particle azimuthal correlations in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
Measurements of multi-particle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged
particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. They help address the
question of whether there is evidence for global, flow-like, azimuthal
correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the
larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is established. In particular, the
second harmonic two-particle cumulants are found to decrease with multiplicity,
characteristic of a dominance of few-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions.
However, when a gap is placed to suppress such correlations,
the two-particle cumulants begin to rise at high-multiplicity, indicating the
presence of global azimuthal correlations. The Pb-Pb values are higher than the
p-Pb values at similar multiplicities. In both systems, the second harmonic
four-particle cumulants exhibit a transition from positive to negative values
when the multiplicity increases. The negative values allow for a measurement of
to be made, which is found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions at
similar multiplicities. The second harmonic six-particle cumulants are also
found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, we generally find
which is indicative of a Bessel-Gaussian
function for the distribution. For very high-multiplicity Pb-Pb
collisions, we observe that the four- and six-particle cumulants become
consistent with 0. Finally, third harmonic two-particle cumulants in p-Pb and
Pb-Pb are measured. These are found to be similar for overlapping
multiplicities, when a gap is placed.Comment: 25 pages, 11 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 20,
